<title>2013 Summer Math-Science-Technology Institute Applications Available</title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="MsoNormal" align="center"><strong><span>Program targets students in Ohio&#8217;s Appalachian region</span></strong></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span>COLUMBUS  - Today the Governor&#8217;s Office of Appalachia announced that applications  for the 2013 Middle and High School Summer Math-Science-Technology  Institute are available. Middle and high school students and high school  teachers from Ohio&#8217;s Appalachian region that are interested in applying  to the program can visit <a href="http://development.ohio.gov/cs/cs_goa_oak.htm">http://development.ohio.gov/cs/cs_goa_oak.htm</a> for detailed information and a copy of the application.</span><span><br /><br />The  2013 Middle and High School Summer Math-Science-Technology Institute  will take place from July 6-19, 2013 for high school students and July  14-19, 2013 for middle school students. Both sessions will be held at  the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the  Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.<br /><br />&quot;The  institute is a great opportunity for students to work with math and  science professionals in real-world scenarios and see how what they  learn in school can be the foundation for a successful career,&quot; said  Jason Wilson, director of the Governor&#8217;s Office of Appalachia. &quot;The  Governor&#8217;s Office of Appalachia is proud to partner with Appalachian  Regional Commission to provide this opportunity. It is my hope that we  will have applicants from each school district in the region this year.&quot;<br /><br />High  school teachers from grades 9-12 will be eligible to participate in the  program and will be selected from math, science and technology  disciplines. High school students who wish to participate must be at  least 16 years of age by July 10, 2013. Middle school students who wish  to participate must be between 12 and 14 years of age by July 14, 2013.  Students will have 24 hours of chaperoned service and the program will  cover all major expenses, including meals, lodging and transportation.  High school teachers participating in the program will receive a stipend  for their participation.<br /><br />Applications will be mailed to middle  school and high school guidance counselors, and are also available on  the Governor&#8217;s Office of Appalachia <a href="http://development.ohio.gov/cs/cs_goa_oak.htm">website</a>. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="MsoPlainText">OACHE is sponsoring a Summit for the College Access Challenge Grant and the recently awarded High School-Higher Education Alignment project for the region. The Summit will be held at Shawnee State University in the University Center Ballroom on Tuesday, April 17<sup>th</sup>. Please join K-16 educators to share in the overview and discussion of promising practices in aligning senior English and mathematics with remediation-free college expectations,<span>&nbsp; </span>blended-learning high school courses, updates from the Board of Regents and Ohio&#8217;s Digital Learning Taskforce, as well as, P-20 strategies and best practices to support the work within the region. Included in the day is an interactive dialogue with high school teachers and higher education faculty.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>High school principals, teachers, counselors, central office personnel, and higher education faculty and administration are encouraged to attend.</p><p class="MsoPlainText">Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the keynote speaker, Dr. Aaron Thompson, at 9:00.&nbsp; The sessions will conclude by 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.&nbsp; We are asking for those attending to complete the registration (for ordering lunches, etc). Grant partners OCAN (Ohio College Access Network), OSCA (the Ohio School Counselor Association), OASFAA (Ohio Association Student Financial Aid Administrators) and OACAC (the Ohio Association for College Admission Counseling) have planned a number of professional development workshops and conferences throughout the school year. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<font size="1">The U.S. Department of Education is pleased to announce an opportunity for your school districts to participate in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Project.&nbsp; Research indicates that 90% of students who complete a FAFSA will enroll in postsecondary education.&nbsp; Through the project, participating districts will have access to FAFSA completion data and give students information about how to pursue a college education.<br /><br />Districts with two or more high schools are invited to apply no later than March 2 for the opportunity of being selected through a randomized selection process.<br /><br />The expansion of the FAFSA Completion Project will include approximately 80 additional participants.</font>]]></content:encoded>

While the title focuses on Counselor preparedness, NOSCA is very interested in looking deeply at partnerships/relationships between counseling staffs and access/success organizations.
